Wine of Moldova is increasingly diversifying its export markets and consolidating its presence in Belgium and the USA. In mid-June, ten winemakers from Moldova, reunited under the “Wine of Moldova. A legend alive” country brand, attended a business meeting with the representatives of several distribution companies in Belgium. At the same time, the distributors from Chicago and New York were interested in Wine of Moldova, after being invited to a Moldovan wine tasting organized by 8 wine companies in our country. The departure of Moldovan winemakers in Brussels and the USA was possible thanks to the support provided by the National Office for Vine and Wine, whose main objective is to support the wine sector in order to penetrate the new export markets for Moldovan wines.
Gheorghe Arpentin, director, National Office for Vine and Wine: “The Belgian export market is an extremely important one for Wine of Moldova. For several years now, five wine companies have been present with their products on the store shelves in Brussels, and the demand is steadily increasing. That is why we consider it appropriate to organize more direct meetings between Moldovan winemakers and local distributors, HoReCa representatives, Belgian journalists, to let them know the Wine of Moldova, and to establish cooperation relations as well. At the same time, we aim to be much more present on the US market, which is on the 1st place according to the value of the wine consumed, with about 70 billion dollars over the last year. We will make the necessary efforts so that Wine of Moldova will be an active presence in the USA as well, where each state has its own laws on the import of wine.”
The Brussels event, hosted at the oldest hotel in the city – “Le Plaza Brussels”, gathered dozens of representatives of distribution companies, as well as journalists and bloggers writing for magazines and specialized portals: “In Vino Veritas” (invinoveritas.be), “Horeca Revue”, tasted4you.be, “les5duvin” (les5duvin.wordpress.com/les-auteurs/). Everyone had the opportunity to participate in a tasting organized in the “Walk Around Tasting” format and to get acquainted with the wines of the 10 wine companies present: “Purcari”, “Asconi”, “Castel Mimi”, “Vinaria din Vale”, “Suvorov – Vin”, “Roots”, “Timbrus”, “Salcuta”, “Maurt”, “Fautor”.
According to statistical data, in the first 4 months of 2019, more than 15,000 liters of wine were exported to Belgium, and during the previous year wine companies sold about 20,000 liters on this market.
At the same time, at the two meetings held in the USA, the Moldovan winemakers managed to make their products known to American businessmen – the top management of importing and distributing quality wines companies, which also have an extended sales network at national and regional level. Thus, in the city of Chicago, 25 distributors managed to get to know the wines presented by the “Suvorov Vin”, “Vinaria din Vale”, “Sălcuţa”, “Cricova” wineries. At the same time, the winemakers from “Asconi”, “Purcari”, “Castel Mimi” and “Fautor” presented their products to about 50 American businessmen in New York.
Statistical data show that in the first four months of this year wine companies exported wines worth over 9.6 million MDL to the US market. In 2018, the value of exports exceeded the amount of 38 million MDL. Wine of Moldova is present on the US market since 2015.
