Visit Moldovan Wine Regions
A visit to Moldova is not complete without a visit to one of its wine regions, each of which has its own treasures to uncover. Read on to find out more about why you should visit Moldova’s wine regions.
Codru
Codru is a wine region in central Moldova stretching from the border with Romania to that with Ukraine on the other side of the country. The region is renowned for its high-quality white and sparkling wines. White grapes account for around 63 percent of plantings. The region is also home to some of the country’s most famous wineries such as Cricova and Milestii Mici with their huge underground cellars and Castel Mimi with its beautiful boutique hotel and world class dining facilities. Other well-known wineries in the region are Chateau Vartely and Asconi.
Stefan Voda
Stefan Voda is a wine region in the south-east of Moldova famous for its red wines. Perhaps the most famous and finest of these red wines is the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Saperavi and Rara Neagra. A visit to this wine region is not complete without a visit to one of its wineries, the most famous of which is Purcari.
Valul lui Traian
Valul lui Traian is a wine region in the southwest of Moldova. Its name derives from an ancient monument named "Train's wall" constructed to protect the territory from Barbarian raids.
Visitors will encounter white wines that are fine and lively, with a complex bouquet. The rose wines of the region are pale pink with shades of raspberry colour and rose petals. Red wines from this region have a more intense colour than in other regions, ranging from red pomegranate to cherry red with fruity aromas and a well-structured taste.
Sparkling wines are greenish to straw coloured, pale-pink and red-Rubin depending on the variety used in assemblies.
The region is home to the famous Cricova and Chateau Vartely wineries as well as many other amazing wine producers.
Divin
Divin is not so much a wine region as it is a geographical area delimited for the production of oak-aged wine distillate known as ‘Divin’ in Moldova. This region extends through-out the Republic of Moldova. Divin is produced using European and indigenous grape varieties grown in the Republic of Moldova and aged for at least 3 years in oak.
Divin has a pleasant, glossy appearance, with a colour varying from light gold to amber, depending on the degree of maturation, with an impressive bouquet of flowers, fruits, vanilla, chocolate, balm, aromatic wood, coconut, and coffee beans.
Kvint, Barza Alba, and Calarasi Divin are perhaps the most well-known of the many high-quality producers of Divin.
